Trust, the enemy’s got plenty tricks up his sleeve... but for now, we’ll just cover one more.
Trick #3:
The enemy persuades us to base our self-worth in our personality, appearance, accomplishments, job, popularity, and talents. These things are all great pieces of us— but they can and will change throughout our lives. They’re unstable, temporary, and centered around our limited, fleshly capabilities.
Instead, God wants our identity and self-worth to come from the greatest and only ever-lasting Thing to ever exist: Himself.
He says that as His children, we are precious, holy, and undeniably worthy, just by virtue of being His. We are worth so much to Him that He created this entire universe just to be with us, and then sent His son to die so that we could be even closer to Him.
In Christ, the value we hold is irreversible.
All of our hair could fall out. We could fail out of school. We could be fired from every job. We could have no friends. We could be deemed the lowest of low by societal standards, and even feel like we have no skills. Our worth will NOT change. By God’s standards, it is non-negotiable... hence why He wants us to find our identity in His Son and His word.
Our Father built a lasting and invigorating identity for us before the foundation of the world. Yet, most people fail to ever claim it, because Satan’s tricked society into creating our own hollow identities.
So... Still Judging Adam & Eve’s Mistake?
Hopefully you can see now that we’re not so different than the first two people, after all.
Just as he did with them, the enemy intentionally plants seeds in today's world to cause doubt. He wants us to question God’s good intentions towards us and as a result, choose what we feel is good.
Want to know the worst part about Satan and his tricks? He doesn’t just smooth talk us into nonchalantly accepting what little he hands us— He gets us to spend our lives grasping for it. Think about all the people you personally know who’ve chosen terrible partners, or worked all types of unfulfilling jobs, because they were secretly chasing the things we’ve discussed in this series. Think about how many times you yourself have done it.
If you can relate (I know I can), don’t beat yourself up about being fooled for so long... That was just the enemy’s plan all along.
He knew that if he dangled a carrot in front of you and got you to spend decades jumping for it, you’d never see the entire garden God has planted just for you.
Luckily, now that your eyes are open to his game, you don’t have to be played by it anymore.
Now that you see that what the enemy wants you to choose is always criminally inferior to God’s pick, you can start recognizing his insulting, low-ball offers in your life, and decide that you instead want what God wants for you.
